What is the Endocannabinoid system and how does it relate to Exercise?

The Endocannabinoid system consists of endocannabinoids which are neurotransmitters and are expressed throughout the central nervous system (spinal cord and brain) and peripheral nervous system (nerves outside the brain and spinal cord).  Endocannabinoids is a naturally synthesized molecules similar to THC which is the chemical responsible for the effect you get from the cannabis plant. Ongoing research is still being done to understand the full function of the endocannabinoid system.

Anandamide is an endogenous cannabinoid neurotransmitter involved in mediating some effects of physical exercise and contributes to exercise-induced euphoria also called runner’s high. The plasma concentration of anandamide increases during physical exercise. Anandamide molecules can cross the blood-brain barrier and it has been suggested that anandamide contributes to the feeling of exercise-induced euphoria or runner’s high.

Anandamide may be the chemical mainly responsible for the runner’s high rather than endorphins.
